Community Traffic Management services were employed in 2011 to help deal with the growing pressures and demands of the Railway in Wartime event on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the town of Pickering.

The event attracts approximately 60,000 visitors to the market town of Pickering throughout the three day event and Community Traffic Management were able to provide a one stop shop for all the NYMR’s traffic and event management needs and concerns.

The involvement of Community Traffic Management has helped to co-ordinate and integrate the parades throughout the town and to raise the safety standards of this popular event. After a number of years’ of Harrogate Scout & Guides not actually marching on the streets for their Annual St George’s Day Parade, in 2013, it was decided that this had to change, and Community Traffic Management were taken on to quite simply make this happen.

From the outset, their approach was “can do”, rather than “too difficult”, working their way around any issues which cropped up in a professional manner, ensuring that a plan which would be accepted by the Highways Department was submitted. Throughout the negotiation phase with the Council, they kept us regularly updated so that I personally had total confidence in their plans and ability to carry them out.

On the day itself, Rich & Paul excelled in briefing the volunteers we supplied to man the road closures and dealing with all traffic issues leaving myself, as Parade Marshal, to deal with the many questions from the hundreds of Scouts, Guides, Leaders and Parents who attended.

York Pride Parade has seen significant growth in the last few years, as such we needed to find a company who could help in making it a safe, enjoyable and reasonably stress-free event to plan and execute. I was directed to Community Traffic Management and swiftly received contact back.

The East Riding Stages Rally is a premier Closed Road stage rally where high performance rally cars compete against the clock. The event utilises public highway roads that have been formally closed by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Road Traffic Act suspended.

Community TM has provided their first-class traffic management services to our event since its inception, and they are a critical partner. They provide road closure planning, signage and on event staffing which ensures that we maintain absolute control of the roads that we use. This is a critical element of our overall Event Safety Plan.

We started working with Community TM in 2014 for the first Vale of York Half Marathon.  I’d worked with other TM providers before, but had been left underwhelmed, at best. From the word go, Rich was a breath of fresh air.  With a clear, efficient and authoritative approach, I immediately felt that traffic management was now one less thing I would need to worry about at our events.

Since that start, we’ve employed Community TM each year on all our major road races, the Vale of York Half Marathon and the Vale of York 10, plus on 2016’s inaugural Chase The Train. My running club also replaced the previous provider for our annual Eccup 10 mile in Leeds with Community TM.

Community Traffic Management have provided traffic management services to the 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross since 2012. Their support both during the preparation and planning stage and on race day has been invaluable.

CTM’s qualified and experienced staff provided advice and suggested appropriate traffic control measures that have improved the safety of competitors, spectators and the public. Richard, Paul and their team attained all the necessary permissions and consents, thereby reducing the technical and administrative burden on the race organising group.

On race day, traffic control measures were implemented quickly and discreetly, and with no input from the race organisers; allowing our team to focus on the race itself. Community Traffic Management have worked with me on our town centre cycle races since 2015 and have always provided an excellent service. Rich and his team have such a wealth of experience and immediately struck-up a good rapport with our contacts at the council, which has been invaluable during the preparations for the events.

From an organiser’s point of view, Community TM are the perfect partner, looking after the planning, submissions & liaisons with the council, the advance notice signage and (crucially!) ensuring that it all goes smoothly on the big day.

We have to close down a circuit in a busy town centre and the team from Community TM do this efficiently whilst still being respectful to residents returning home. Rich and his team are just fantastic. We organise one of the biggest town centre cycle races in the country and being able to rely on Community TM for all things traffic just makes a massive difference to our ability to deliver a great event. They assist with liaising with the council, the police and British Cycling. They design and then manage the traffic management scheme we use on race day. And they implement a ruthlessly efficient road closure plan which efficiently and safely closes the roads before the event and then reopens them at the end of the night. Rich Houghton is real easy to work with, good humoured, enthusiastic, does what he says he going to do and knows who to speak to to get stuff done. He is now an integral part of our team and is one of the reasons why the Otley Cycle Races are now so big.

The East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix was a project envisioned, designed, up-classified to an Elite Series race with British Cycling.

We formed an excellent professional relationship, teaching both myself and the race ambassadors; what the role of a qualified traffic marshal was and the importance of safety on the ground with a ‘holistic approach’ of polite customer service to educate, support and be enthusiastic to a newly established bike race known as the East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix bike race, but also to the interested visitors and residents of East Cleveland what was happening, why and when.

I can’t thank CTM enough, the organisation and delivery of plans to the local authority to the ‘on the ground’ delivery of traffic management, community work and engagement with the organising parties, local authority and residents in the East Cleveland area led to the fantastic delivery of our race and meant with confidence we have been able to submit application for a following years race using, of course, CTM!

On taking over the running of the Lincoln Grand Prix Cycle Race in 2023 – the most established, biggest day of racing on the domestic calendar, CTM were invaluable in achieving a new, dynamic closure for the event – something that had never been achieved before.  Their vast experience in traffic management around cycling events, and ability to work with the police and central escort group ensured a safe race and minimum inconvenience for the community of Lincoln.
